ZrN (Zirconium nitride) Coating has high hardness and lubricity, is very durable and is superior to uncoated carbide in every way. ZrN Coated tools will run cooler and give you a better surface finish. ZrN has a hardness of 25 (GPA) and coefficient of friction .5 DLC (Diamond like Carbon) has excellent hardness and lubricity. DLC is a very popular coating for machining aluminum, graphite, composites and carbon fiber. In aluminum this coating is ideal for high production light finishing applications such as finish profiling and circle milling where holding a size and finish is critical. DLC is not ideal for slotting or heavy milling due to its lower working temperature compared to ZrN. Under proper conditions tool life is 4-10 times greater than ZrN coated tooling. DLC has a hardness of 80 (GPA) and coefficient of friction .1
