Note about gage length on Dual Contact steep taper tool holders
Steep taper tool holders are originally designed as a taper contact only interface. The gage line is determined by measuring the distance from a standardized, known reference diameter on the taper. This point is called the gage line. In most cases, this is around the same area where you can see the grind relief on the precision ground taper, close to where the flange starts.
Since development of the dual contact system in the early 1990's newer tool holders with the dual contact option have a precisely ground flange shoulder for attaining a dual contact fit with the spindle face. This precise shoulder is not at the same location as the gage line! Gage line is still measured and calibrated like a standard steep taper tool holder. Please do not measure probe tip to flange and think that your tool has been improperly made. Thank you.
